Your Privacy Matters

BeerTag is a location-based game that requires GPS access to function. We take your privacy seriously and have designed the app to minimize data collection while still delivering the core gameplay experience. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, how we use it, and how you control it.

Location Data

Location data is essential for BeerTag's gameplay. Here's how we handle it:

  • Opt-in Only: Location sharing is always opt-in. You choose which friends can see your location.
  • Per-Friend Control: You can enable or disable location sharing for each friend individually.
  • Real-time Only: We only transmit your location during active game engagements (when missiles are in flight).
  • No Location History: We do not store a history of your locations. Once an engagement ends, location data is discarded.
  • Go Off-Grid: You can go "off-grid" at any time, which completely stops location sharing (but also prevents you from launching missiles).

Safe Zones

You can define safe zones where you cannot be targeted:

  • Home and Work: Set locations like home or work as safe zones.
  • Local Storage: Safe zone coordinates are stored locally on your device.
  • Privacy Protected: The actual addresses of your safe zones are never transmitted to other players — they only know they cannot target you when you're in a safe zone.

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Username: A display name you choose (can be a nickname).
  • Email Address: For account recovery and important notifications only.
  • Profile Picture: Optional — you can use a default avatar.

We do NOT collect your real name, phone number, or physical address.

Friend Connections

The friend system works as follows:

  • Mutual Consent: Both players must accept a friend request to connect.
  • Invite Methods: You can invite friends via shareable link, QR code, or by sharing usernames.
  • Contact Access: If you choose to invite via contacts, we only access contact data momentarily to send invites — we do not upload or store your contact list.

Game Data

We store the following game-related data:

  • Match History: Records of missile launches, hits, misses, and defenses used.
  • Points and Rank: Your progression level and earned points.
  • Arsenal: Missiles and defenses you've unlocked or purchased.
  • Beer Ledger: IOU records if using Beer Mode (visible only to involved parties).

Push Notifications

BeerTag sends push notifications for:

  • Incoming missile alerts (critical for gameplay)
  • Friend requests
  • Settlement reminders (Beer Mode)

You can disable non-critical notifications in app settings. Missile alerts are essential for the game to function and cannot be disabled while playing.

Payment Information

Points Mode: No payment information is collected.

Beer Mode: No real payments — IOUs are tracked in-app.

In-App Purchases: If you purchase missile packs or premium content, payment is processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment details.

Crypto Mode (Future): Wallet integration will be handled through WalletConnect. We will never have access to your private keys or wallet credentials.

Data Sharing

We share your data in these limited circumstances:

  • With Friends: Your username, profile picture, and real-time location (during active engagements only) are shared with friends you've approved.
  • Spectators: If spectating is enabled, friends in your group can see active engagements.
  • Service Providers: We use secure cloud infrastructure to run the game. These providers are contractually bound to protect your data.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose data if required by law or to protect safety.

We do NOT sell your data to advertisers or third parties.

Data Security

We protect your data through:

  • Encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for all data transmission
  • Encrypted storage for sensitive data
  • Regular security audits
  • Access controls limiting who can view user data

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of your data.
  • Correction: Update inaccurate information.
  • Deletion: Delete your account and all associated data.
  • Portability: Export your data in a standard format.
  • Withdraw Consent: Stop location sharing or delete your account at any time.

Children's Privacy

BeerTag is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we discover such data has been collected, we will delete it immediately.

International Users

BeerTag is operated from Portugal. If you use the app from outside the EU, your data may be transferred to and processed in the EU, which has strong data protection laws under GDPR.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be:

  • Posted on this page with an updated date
  • Notified via in-app message for significant changes
